Stephen Crabb, MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire, met staff and volunteers at his local Citizens Advice in Haverfordwest on 1st September 2016.
Mr Crabb enjoyed a tour of the local charity, and learned about some of the issues people in Pembrokeshire turn to Citizens Advice for help with.
Citizens Advice Pembrokeshire - which advised 5,000 people on 14,500 problems
in the last year - estimates that its advice helped put £8 million back in local
people’s pockets over the last 12 months.
During the visit, Mr Crabb met with William Jones, Energy Champion for the 3 Counties of Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire and he learned about the Energy Best Deal scheme which has helped 140 local people save a total of £15,500 on their fuel bills over the last year.
Advice Services Manager, Nikki Neufeld, spoke to Mr Crabb about how Citizens Advice is helping local people adapt to the government’s programme of welfare reforms. This includes supporting people to apply for the Personal Independence Payment, as well as Universal Credit.
Stephen Crabb, local MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire, said:
“I’d like to thank the staff and volunteers at Citizens Advice Pembrokeshire for providing the advice local people need”.
“As the government oversees the biggest welfare reform in 60 years, it’s good to hear from some of the people working on the frontline. Citizens Advice not only provides a vital service for people adapting to welfare change, but also helps with a wide range of other problems including housing, debt and employment”.
“I look forward to working with Citizens Advice to support my constituents, helping them get them back into work where possible and supporting those who might have difficulty accessing benefits and services by themselves”.
Vicki Skeats, Chief Officer of Citizens Advice Pembrokeshire, said:
“It was good to welcome our local MP Stephen Crabb”.
“We were able to share some of what we learn from helping local people with issues surrounding benefits, debt and switching energy suppliers”.
“We look forward to continuing our conversation with Mr Crabb and working closely with his office to serve local people in Pembrokeshire.”
